CNP Expo Highlight: HobbyTown Enhances E-Commerce Strategy

HobbyTownUSAHow does a retailer that caters to a hyper-local set of niche enthusiasts, with a franchise structure that features local pricing and little centralized distribution, adapt its customer experience to the general, global nature of e-commerce? For HobbyTown USA®, a chain of more than 150 locally-owned stores in 44 states (and plans in the works for franchises in Australia), it required a solution that would bind the online experience as closely as possible with the in-store experience while taking advantage of the revenue-expanding opportunities presented by e-commerce, according to Tim Van Ert, the Nebraska-based company’s senior vice president.

HobbyTown USA® has been serving model builders, train collectors and radio-controlled car enthusiasts for more than 60 years and has operated under a franchise structure since 1985. After the company acknowledged the permanence of Internet commerce in the late 1990s, it struggled for a long time with how to represent inventory and pricing on its Website that differed among its independently-owned outlets and the distributor to which it had outsourced Website fulfillment.

Finally, in 2009, the company realized it needed to embrace the individual nature of its franchised locations and develop an e-commerce solution that reflected to Website visitors the exact inventory and pricing available in their local area.

  • VeriFone Sets SAIL for Mobile Acceptance - May 10, 2012
    VeriFone this week introduced SAIL, its mobile credit-card acceptance system that will compete with Square, PayPal Here and Intuit’s GoPayment. The company is offering smaller merchants the app and plug-in dongle that enables iOS and Android devices to accept card payments for free.
  • BOKU Signs Direct Billing Agreement with Deutsche Telekom - May 7, 2012
    Direct carrier billing technology provider BOKU,Inc. on Thursday signed a direct billing agreement with Deutsche Telekom, the largest mobile network operator in Germany. Under the agreement, Deutsche Telekom’s 34 million subscribers can purchase digital and virtual goods online and charge them to their existing wireless account.
