  • U.K. Payments Council to Set Minimum Standards for Authentication - Oct. 27. 2011
    In the second edition of its National Payments Plan, the U.K. Payments Council revised its roadmap for payments in the country with new minimum standards regarding customer authentication for online and mobile payments. In its second try, the council sought massive input from stakeholders after their first attempt was derailed when the body unilaterally made the surprisingly controversial decision to abolish paper checks.
  • Facebook Trialling Credits on Other Sites - Oct. 27, 2011
    Facebook is urging developers to extend the reach its virtual currency, Facebook Credits, on Websites other than Facebook. The company said on its developer’s blog that by letting developers offer Credits on other Websites, they can "offer a more unified app experience to users beyond apps on Facebook".
  • Financial ‘Blockade’ Forces WikiLeaks Shutdown - Oct. 27, 2011
    WikiLeaks, the controversial Website that has published the secrets of governments and businesses, has ceased publishing operations, according to a statement on its Website. The company has pointed its finger squarely at large financial institutions and the card networks for imposing “an unlawful financial blockade” that has undermined its ability to accept payments on its Website.
  • Alaric Launches ‘Self-Learning’ Fraud Solution - Oct. 24, 2011
    Alaric International, a London-based technology company specializing in payments related products and services, recently released a software solution that uses self-learning technology to root out card fraud. The company said its Fractals 3.7 employs tailored user-supplied rules and sophisticated mathematical models to detect fraud.
  • Irish Gateway Provider Expanding - Oct. 24, 2011
    Realex Payments, a Dublin-based online payment gateway provider, announced on Friday it is expanding its staff to accommodate a surge in business resulting from “a significant deal” it signed with a U.K. financial institution. While details of the agreement have not been disclosed, it involves Realex Payments providing an outsourced arrangement to the client for its retailers’ online payment processing.
  • Mobile Operators Partner for Direct Carrier Billing in New Zealand - Oct. 24, 2011
    Four mobile network operators in New Zealand have agreed to a framework that will enable customers to purchase applications and digital content on their mobile device and have the charge added to their phone bill. 2degrees, Telecom, TUANZ and Vodafone partnered to form the Telecommunications Carriers’ Forum (TCF) Working Party, which has developed the Payforit Trusted Mobile Payments Framework to provide an alternative to credit or debit cards for customers to make low-cost purchases using their mobile phones.
  • Adyen Expands in Brazil - Oct. 20, 2011
    Adyen, an online and mobile payment processor, has opened a new Latin America office in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Adyen said the expansion is in response to persistent growth in many Latin American markets, coupled with a rising demand for international payment processing.
  • Attend Advanced Payments Conference for 25% Off - Oct. 20, 2011
    Next month in Washington, D.C., payments professionals will gather to learn about the latest innovations in three burgeoning areas of the payments industry: transit, government and mobile and contactless. The US Advanced Payments Summit will help attendees in these verticals “accelerate management buy-in and deployment of advanced payment strategy by learning from companies and agencies that have…proven cost savings.”
  • Report: U.K. Consumers Leery of Mobile Payments - Oct. 17, 2011
    Consumers in the U.K. say perceived security issues will prevent many from using mobile devices to pay for goods and services, according to new research from Sandside, England-based consumer research firm Intersperience. The report, which questioned British adults on their attitudes towards using mobile phone payment systems, found that just 17 percent would use their mobile phone as a wallet in future.
  • Sri Lanka Ports Now Able to Accept Online Payments - Oct. 17, 2011
    On Nov. 1, Sri Lanka Customs said it will implement an electronic payments system that eventually will enable the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to accept credit card payments online. The government agency said it has partnered with the Bank of Ceylon and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to implement UNCTAD’s ASYCUDAWorld solution.
  • Global Payments Chooses Accertify for Fraud Protection - Oct. 14, 2011
    Anti-fraud solutions provider Accertify said Global Payments Inc., an Atlanta-based electronic transaction payment processing company, will offer its e-commerce merchants a fraud screening solution based on the American Express subsidiary’s risk management technology. The solution will be offered to Global Payments clients through its Global TransportR gateway, which enables merchants to protect against card-not-present (CNP) fraud and mitigate counterfeit and identify theft risks.

    A California payments consultancy has produced a report evaluating the consumer-facing payments features of 20 of the top online merchants in the U.S. Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2011 Online Retail Payments Scorecard: New Options to Maximize Online Shopping Revenue examines four categories of payment features: payments information, payments options, payments security, and customer support.
  • WorldPay Adds Functionality to IBM E-Commerce Platform - Oct. 14, 2011
    London-based processor WorldPay has partnered with CSI, a U.K. multi-channel solution provider, to create a new payment plug-in for IBM’s e-commerce platform WebSphere Commerce. WorldPay said it worked with CSI on a pre-built platform for retailers to facilitate accepting payments on their Websites.
  • U.K. CNP Fraud Down 8% This Year - Oct. 11, 2011
    For the fourth year in a row, card not present fraud in the U.K. during the first half of the year fell, according to the U.K. Cards Association. For the first six months of 2011, fraud losses on CNP transactions in Britain totaled £109.2 million ($171.16 million), down 8 percent from the same period a year ago.
  • Oracle Businesses Outsource PCI Compliance to CRE Secure - Oct. 11, 2011
    CRE Secure, a provider of end-to-end PCI compliance for CNP merchants, said that Oracle support company iBizSoft Inc. will incorporate CRE Secure’s HTML Clone technology to seamlessly remove Oracle E-Business Suite users from the scope of PCI compliance. CRE Secure said its technology enables iBizSoft’s Oracle customers to outsource PCI-sensitive parts of the payment process.
  • Mobile Payments to Triple by 2015 - Oct. 11, 2011
    Consumers will spend more than $170 billion buying physical goods via mobile devices worldwide by 2015, according to U.K.-based consultancy Juniper Research. The company predicts mobile spending to reach $60 billion by the end of this year.
  • American Express Partners with Chinese Firm for Online Payments - Oct. 3, 2011
    American Express Company has partnered with a Chinese payment gateway for an online payment service. It is the New York City-based company’s first electronic payment partner in China. According to the agreement, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and American Express will develop a way for users of Tencent's online-payments service to buy goods on websites outside China, the companies said recently.
  • Durbin Amendment Official, BofA Launches Debit Card Fee - Oct. 3, 2011
    Late last week, Bank of America announced it would levy debit card users a $5 fee to recoup revenue lost when regulators sided with merchants in their fight against interchange. Since Congress set debit interchange limits as part of the Dodd-Frank financial reform effort, several major banks have announced some form of fees attached to checking accounts, which for years had largely been free.
